Thaj is an ancient city located in the Eastern Province, east of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was once one of the important cultural centers in the Arabian Peninsula. Archaeological studies say that this city flourished in the first millennium BC, and it is considered the largest Hellenistic site known in the Eastern Province to date.

Geographical locationThaj is located in the eastern region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, approximately 95 km from the city of Jubail, approximately 150 km to the northwest of the city of Dhahran, and 300 km from the city of Dammam. Thaj is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Eastern Province and in the Kingdom. The site is numbered “215-208” in the records of the Saudi Antiquities and Museums Administration, and Thaj is located in a shallow valley that slopes slowly towards the north. It is located on the old trade caravan route heading south to Al-Yamamah and Al-Aflaj and from there to Wadi Al-Dawasir and then to the village of Al-Faw and Najran. It has gained prominent importance in providing the necessary services for transit trade and was perhaps one of the most important stations on that route.

Al-Jarha cityThe city of Al-Jarha was known in ancient writings for its wealth and economic power. It is a city whose location is not yet known, but many scholars suggest that the archaeological site of Thaj is its location, and it had relations with the city of Al-Faw.
